Steve Smith has regained top spot in the ICC Test batting rankings after leapfrogging India captain Virat Kohli.
Smith missed the third Ashes Test at Headingley but has toppled Kohli following the latter recorded a duck in the second innings of the series-sealing 257-run of India over West Indies in Jamaica.
The Australian heads the way with 904 points, together with Kohli a place back on 903 points and New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson in position on points.
Smith – who has scored 144, 142 and 92 in his three innings in this Ashes series – could increase his tally during the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford this week however Kohli is not back in Test action until India sponsor South Africa in October.
Smith originally became # 1 at December 2015 however Kohli overtook him in August 2018 if Smith was out of action due to his single-family ban following the ball-tampering scandal.
After finishing a century and two rebounds in four innings at the 2-0 series triumph over West Indies in the Caribbean, four places have risen from 11th to seventh.
Jason Holder and jasprit Bumrah have climbed with Bumrah, into the top five of their Test bowling rankings.
India seamer Bumrah picked up six wickets, such as a hat-trick, in West Indies’ first innings in Jamaica, while Windies skipper Holder bagged 5-77 in the opening dig of India.
Australia’s Pat Cummins (908 points) tops the standings, followed closely by South Africa’a Kagiso Rabada (851) along with Bumrah (835), with Holder and James Anderson tied for fourth (814).
With Vernon Philander, Shakib Al Hasan, Ravindra Jadeja and Ben Stokes rounding out the top five in that list holder remains the.
