After the Real Madrid star retained their Euro 2020 qualification hopes alive against Azerbaijan, wales director Ryan Giggs hailed Gareth Bale.
Bale struck six minutes from time his goal for his state and his first in 10 weeks to give Wales a 2-1 victory and lift them to within three points of Group E pacesetters Croatia and Hungary.
Anything but success against Azerbaijan – ranked 109 in the entire world and 85 places below Wales – could have been a disaster due to their hopes of eligibility.
“Obviously Gareth has scored so many crucial goals for Wales over the years,” Giggs said.
“Normally when he scores he keeps grading, so that I was happy to see that he score for Real Madrid a week.
“Just enjoy the rest of the lads he showed fantastic personality, kept going to the conclusion, I am very pleased for him.
“We’re overly fussy to get to the goal, too rushed. I have been in games such as this before, you are not certain whether to stick or spin. There weren’t enough players in good shape from the first half”
Wales held a half-time lead that was fortuitous through the bizarre goal of Pavlo Pashayev.
The full-back was oblivious that Bale shot was spinning in his leadership and he led it past progressing goalkeeper Salahat Agayev.
However, Azerbaijan equalised through Mahir Emreli at a Welsh comedy of mistakes that are defensive.
Giggs said:”I was not pleased with the first half. We didn’t play well and we didn’t adhere into the game program.
“I knew 1-0 would not be great enough, I was frustrated. We had a whole lot of possession but the ball did not move fast enough.
“We were not patient and that is what they are good at, sitting in their shape, win the ball sprint forward.”
However, Giggs commended his side’s fighting qualities, adding:”I’m delighted with the 3 points, with the character we have shown.
“We constantly work hard and we’ll learn from it. We’ll delight in this because it is not easy to win things within this category.”
